Senior Health Issues During COVID 19

Senior Health Issues During COVID 19

If you are like me, a senior citizen,  you worry more about your senior health issues during COVID 19.  My health is neither better nor worse, but I worry about what to do if I need to see a doctor.

Senior Health Issues During COV19

Waiting Rooms

Crowded offices are not good for those with senior health issues.

My biggest concern is sitting in a waiting room with other sick people even with social distancing in place.  At the beginning of “sheltering”, my wife and I had all our groceries and medications dropped at our front door.  Even then we took precautions to clean every item.  We eased up on that, but still have concerns about waiting rooms at the doctor’s office.  Initially, we cancelled appointments.  Realizing that this COVID 19 is a long term thing, we rescheduled.

Pharmacies

Senior health issues have changed the way people pick up their medications.

Seniors are considered vulnerable in terms of COV19.  Those of us with health conditions are considered even more at risk.  We visit pharmacies regularly to for prescriptions.  There always seems to be a line and a long waiting time.  We think about this when we need to get medication.  Young or old, everyone waiting has some kind of medical need.  Most of the time, we go with curbside pickup for medications.

Specialty Appointments

As it turns out, we have needed dental and eye appointments during COV19.  These were unscheduled and unanticipated, but related to our senior health issues.  The main difficulty is that these appointments were at offices we did not know well with staff we do not know.  This simply meant that we were unaware of office procedures.  Calling in advance to ask about COVID protocol helped put our minds at ease.

Medical Appointments and Senior Health Issues

Here’s what we do to prepare for medical appointments and trips to the pharmacy.

  • We make sure we are feeling good on the day of an appointment.
  • If we don’t know an office, we call to find out about their COVID 19 protocols.
  • We always have a mask with us and hand sanitizer in the car.
  • We social distance.
  • If an office seems very crowded, we will often reschedule the appointment.
  • We order medications in bulk.
  • We use curb side pickup for medications.
  • We do teleconferenced appointments when possible.
  • We follow office protocols.
  • We wash our hands after each appointment even after using hand sanitizer.

There is no need to panic because of senior health issues and COVID 19.  Taking steps to be safe and healthy just makes sense.

I write this comment with tears in my eyes. Please, follow all the preventive steps addressed here. Please don’t eased up on these suggestions. Don’t go to the other extreme. There is no need to panic.

My grandpa has passed away this Saturday. My grandma is recovering well. We’re thankful about grandma. But we miss grandpa so much.

We start to look back at the things we could have done or the ones we shouldn’t have done. But there is very little profit to that. Those thoughts won’t bring him back. But one thing is clear, to you out there, stay safe.

I am so sorry to hear about your grandfather.  We are not letting up even though things are opening all around us.  Thank you so much for caring enough to write that caution to me.  God’s peace at this said time.

It has been a concern for the older folks to get all the necessary check-ups done during these uncertain times. The biggest worry for most people, especially those who have comorbidities is getting sick with COVID, so many have not been going for their regular checkups.

Luckily it is getting better now, and it is key to still keep yourself safe by social distancing and wearing a mask at all times. Try at all costs not to touch your face with unwashed hands, as I think this is how a lot of people have contracted the virus.

Thanks for all these valuable tips, as it is always good to have a checklist before we venture out to our medical practitioner.

At 64, I’m certainly aware of these concerns. We don’t sweat it too much, but depending on the doctor’s office and how they operate, combined with the covid laws in any individual state can have an impact on the service conditions in offices. Wishing you and your wife continued good health and please stay safe.

Dealing with the COVID 19 alone is not easy and many people feel bad about the total condition they find themselves and I really think that it will come to an end soon. Being a senior is not easy in such time and I have always made a research on how I can be safe and I’ve been really careful about it.

We are being careful as well.  The good thing is that we have stopped all our running around.  Thanks for taking the time to read the article and write.

Help there James. This si such an eye opening article that you have shared. Thank you for telling your story. I can remember when I first read it that senior citizens were more susceptible to the coronavirus, I remember thinking at the time that it was probably one of the Hoax being passed around but still it got me thinking about how hard it’d be for senior citizens to cope.
